Jobs gave us the bicycle for the mind. Four decades on, that metaphor has run out of road — because AI does not make us faster at the thinking we already do. It shows us intellectual terrain we could not previously see.
In 1980, Steve Jobs articulated one of the most compelling metaphors for the personal computer's transformative potential: it was to be a bicycle for the mind.

The democratisation of advanced cognitive tools promises to reshape society in ways as profound as the printing press. Just as the telescope moved from an elite scientific instrument to a tool available to amateur astronomers, these capabilities are becoming accessible to individuals and organisations of every size.
That accessibility is the part most often underrated. The printing press did not matter because it printed faster. It mattered because it changed who was permitted to think in public.
